Visiting a major cancer hospital over an extended period of time is a humbling experience. There is a constant stream of troubled souls coming through the doors. They are met and treated by staff who are all kind, empathetic and cheerful.
My radiotherapy team was processing a patient every fifteen minutes; placing the body in an exact position and then fine tuning the machine such that the radiotherapy was directed precisely. A huge responsibility with little time available for niceties.
But I was always greeted with a smile, supportive comments were offered, and as I left they implied that they looked forward to seeing me the next day; which they almost certainly didn’t; any more than I looked forward to seeing them. As I changed back into my clothes I could hear them greeting the next patient with equal warmth. Good people.
For my final session, the least I could do is bring them a farewell cake:
